Manchester United rejected an emergency loan plea from Wolves for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as punishment for the treatment of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

According to a report in The Telegraph Wolves contacted Old Trafford after injuries to Andy Lonergan and Carl Ikeme but had their request rejected by Jose Mourinho.

Borthwick-Jackson moved to Molineux at the start of the season but has only made seven appearances with none of them coming under new Wolves boss Paul Lambert.

Wolves were forced to give a debut to Harry Burgoyne against Fulham at the weekend with the 19-year-old losing four goals although Wolves managed to take a point from the match.

Lambert has been forced to look elsewhere for an experienced back-up keeper with the hotline to Old Trafford now closed.

Johnstone has enjoyed loan spells at Doncaster and Preston over the last two seasons is believed to be interesting Aston Villa with Steve Bruce keen to bring the keeper on loan to Villa Park.
