He’s continued to impress onlookers so far this season and now, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is targeting Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk in a £30 million January swoop, report The Mirror.

The Red Devils boss has reportedly outlined the Netherlands international as a priority signing in the New Year with Chris Smalling having failed to impress alongside Eric Bailly.

While Phil Jones made his first start since injury in the 1-3 victory at Swansea City on Sunday, van Dijk is still the man Mourinho wants to complement £30 million summer arrival Bailly.

Having alluded to the weak mental strength of his United side so far this season, van Dijk appears to be a classy defender who isn’t fazed by the grandeur of any occasion, as showcased in his impressive Saints spell to date.

Sanctioning multi-million deals for their prized assets down the years, Southampton have earned a reputation for selling their best players which will only buoy United’s hopes of signing the former Celtic man.

The report claims van Dijk is valued around the £30 million mark which will prove no problem for Manchester United who have grown used to spending massive fees in recent years.
