He’s one of the highest-rated defenders in the Premier League and now, football pundit Micky Quinn claims he’s heard that Liverpool will bid for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk in January, report HITC.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast this morning, the former Portsmouth and Newcastle United striker believes an offer from the Reds is imminent in the New Year.

Quinn claimed: “I believe they’re interested in Van Dijk, when the transfer window opens up. They love a Southampton player, they’ll probably go back again.”

Southampton fans are likely to roll their eyes at this latest speculation with van Dijk having signed a six-year contract extension at St. Mary’s Stadium back in May.

However, given the Saints’ history in having sold Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Sadio Mane to the Reds in recent years, Southampton fans have reason to feel a tad concerned.

One thing for sure is that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds would have to pay a massive fee to even get Southampton talking, given the extension the Netherlands international signed in May.

What’s more, with Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren having enjoyed a promising centre back partnership so far this season, Saints fans are wondering whether Liverpool even need van Dijk right now.
