Liverpool should re-sign Steven Gerrard as a player, according to ex red Mark Lawrenson (The Mirror).

The states-side and former Liverpool captain announced he is to leave MLS LA Galaxy and says he has been given options both “on and off the pitch.”

Gerrard is currently pursuing his UEFA A coaching badges, but Lawrenson thinks he could still be a formidable force on the pitch.

“They will not have to pay him fortunes – they can tell him if they need him he’ll play” said Lawrenson

“He would be brilliant to have around the club because he would be in awe of Klopp, so that is just not a worry. I am sure Klopp would love it too – the only effects would be positive.”

The 36 year-old left Liverpool for LA in 2015 and scored 5 goals in 34 appearances over two seasons in America.

Before that though, he cemented himself as a Liverpool legend after making 710 appearances, scoring 186 times and winning eight major honours.

He said he was “proud” of his accomplishments in the US, adding his time there was an “incredible experience”.
