Manchester United are risking losing Michael Carrick for nothing in January- for the second year running.

According to a report in The Sun no new deal has yet been offered to the 35-year-old who is believed to be high on the wanted list of his home town club Newcastle United.

Last season Carrick thought that he was playing his last match for United in the final of the FA Cup in May but Jose Mourinho got a new contract put in place just before July 1 when his old deal expired.

Carrick has only made three league appearances this season and is coming to terms with the fact that his 12 year Old Trafford career could be coming to a halt.

Newcastle have long been linked with a move for the midfielder who would be a popular addition to Rafa Benitez’s squad if as expected they bounce back into the top flight as Champions.

From January 1 Carrick is free to discuss a pre-contract deal with his Old Trafford contract running out on June 30.
