Liverpool are planning yet another raid on Southampton with Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen the targets of a £40m January raid.

According to a report in The Sun Jurgen Klopp has identified the Saints duo to plug the gaps in defence to create a genuine title challenge in the new year.

Southampton has been a regular shopping venue for Liverpool down the years with mixed results coming from the signings of Rickie Lambert, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, and Sadio Mane.

Ironically, at the weekend Liverpool kept a clean sheet at St Mary’s but it was the performances of two of the home defenders that had Klopp drooling.

Van Dijk signed an improved six year contract towards the end of last season despite joining from Celtic less than a year earlier but the Dutchman has never hidden his ambition or the view that he should be playing at the very top level.

McQueen has only recently broken into the Saints first team but is out of contract at the end of the season with Claude Peul desperate to get the left-back onto a new deal after some outstanding performances domestically and in the Europa League.
