Becoming Sparta Rotterdam’s youngest ever goalscorer when registering against Emmen last year, Newcastle United are interested in signing 17-year-old centre back Rick van Drongelen, report HITC.

According to the story, the Magpies are closely trailing the teenager’s progress having become an ever-present since making his first team debut last year.

Promoted to the Eredivisie this term, van Drongelen has started all 12 of Sparta Rotterdam’s league fixtures so far and Rafael Benitez is now keen on bidding for the Dutchman in January.

Having already drawn comparisons to Dutch defensive legend Jaap Stam, HITC’s report doesn’t claim how much van Drongelen is currently worth.

However, a Netherlands Under-19 international already, Sparta Rotterdam will know that Newcastle United boast a lot of money from the summer sales of Georginio Wijnaldum, Andros Townsend and Moussa Sissoko.

Having previously sent scouts to watch van Drongelen in Sparta Rotterdam’s 2-2 draw with Hercales Almelo recently, Newcastle United appear the most keen party at present.
