In a swoop that could upset their fierce East London rivals Millwall, West Ham United are preparing a £1.5 million bid to sign Lions full back Mahlon Romeo, report The Mirror.

Scouting the Antigua and Barbuda international for a third time when Millwall hosted Fleetwood Town last weekend, Slaven Bilic’s side are poised to make their move in January.

Having utilised as many as three different options at right back so far this season, all of Sam Byram, Alvaro Arbeloa and Michail Antonio have hardly convinced in the position.

While the Hammers are interested in signing Romeo, it does remain to be seen whether the 21-year-old would be able to handle a huge step up in quality from League One so soon.

Starting his career as a youth team player at Arsenal, Romeo earned his senior professional debut for Gillingham back in 2013 ahead of signing at The Den in the summer of 2015.
