Manchester United’s teenage striker Marcus Rashford has finished as runner-up in the race to land the coveted 2016 European Golden Boy Award, report IBTimes.

Missing out on first place to former Red Devils transfer target Renato Sanches, the Bayern Munich midfielder has been deemed the best player aged 21 and younger for the year 2016.

Despite narrowly missing out on winning the award, 2016 has been a truly outstanding period for 18-year-old Rashford who has been the Red Devils’ top goalscorer for the calendar year.

Boasting eight goals in 18 Premier League appearances so far, the Manchester-born striker remains a huge part of Jose Mourinho’s plans despite the manager’s reputation for not promoting youth so readily.

As for the winner Sanches, the 19-year-old midfielder was a part of the Portugal squad that won Euro 2016 in the summer and the teenager has previously spoken about United making contact for his services.

In quotes from The Sun, Sanches previously claimed: “Manchester United made an offer. I think it was well known. But I had other offers as well.

“I chose Bayern Munich because it’s a great club. They have a 65,000-seater stadium and an atmosphere similar to Benfica. I’ll win titles.”
