Manchester United used Sunday to send scouts to Portugal to monitor the progress of Benfica duo Goncalo Guedes and Alex Grimaldo, report the Daily Star.

According to Portuguese source A Bola, Red Devils scouts were at Benfica’s game against Belenenses to keep tabs on the 19-year-old winger and 21-year-old left back who now appear to be on United’s radar.

Guedes – who emerged from Benfica’s youth ranks – has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo in the past and has been previously been linked with a transfer to Arsenal.

As for Grimaldo, Benfica signed the full back from Barcelona B in December 2015 and the attack-minded full back has now scored two goals while racking up four assists in a total of 12 appearances for Rui Vitoria’s men this term.

With both of these players still being young, it remains to be seen whether Jose Mourinho is lining them up as potential January transfer window solutions or whether United’s interest is for the long-term.

Current Red Devils left back Luke Shaw received the public wrath of Mourinho after a poor display against Watford earlier this season but talk of Grimaldo being a replacement for the England international is too premature right now.
