Having recently revealed that Arsenal were keen on signing him over the summer, odds on Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez joining Arsenal in January have fallen to 4/1 with Ladbrokes, report Squawka.
According to the original story from The Guardian, the report claimed the Foxes have a “gentleman’s agreement” in place with Mahrez to let the Algerian international leave for around £40 million next summer.
Remaining at King Power Stadium alongside Jamie Vardy, the fact Mahrez didn’t want to create a “conflict” with Leicester City demonstrates he was indeed interested in Arsenal’s offer.
Arsenal uncharacteristically splashed the cash on numerous reinforcements over the summer but interestingly didn’t make any move for a winger after seeing their £35 million bid for Mahrez turned down.
With Theo Walcott having started the 2016/17 campaign well, it remains to be seen whether there is still room for Mahrez in January, particularly considering Alex Iwobi has started the season in fine fettle to boot.
Perhaps a lot will depend on what the future holds for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the former Southampton man struggling in Arsenal’s attacking pecking order right now.
