He started Newcastle United’s 6-0 demolition of Preston North End in the EFL Cup this week but Christian Atsu has admitted it’s been difficult adjusting to English football, report Chronicle Live.

Currently on a season-long loan spell at St. James’ Park from Chelsea, Ghanaian international Atsu has started two Championship fixtures for Rafael Benitez’s Magpies so far this term.

On Chelsea’s books since 2013, Atsu was frank and honest when speaking about his experiences in England so far claiming: “I have to be honest, I’ve had a very difficult time in the English league.

“To adapt to the style of play was difficult – everything was quicker. I had little opportunity to prove myself but in football, you cannot blame anybody. You have to take responsibility.”

Enduring two forgettable loan spells at both Everton and AFC Bournemouth prior to his Magpies stint, the 24-year-old only managed five Premier League appearances for the Toffees while being outcast by Eddie Howe.

Achieving more game time by dropping down a division with Newcastle United, Atsu is at least managing to contribute more often.

Appearing from the bench on five occasions in the Championship so far, it would appear Atsu has been cast into the role of impact sub on Tyneside for the time being.
