Arsene Wenger enjoyed his most expensive recruitment drive this summer but one man who decided not to join Arsenal was Guinea international midfielder Naby Keita, report The Mirror.

In quotes attributed to SportNet, the now Red Bull Leipzig midfielder revealed that the Gunners were among several clubs interested in his services this past transfer window.

Keita claimed: “Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were all interested in signing me and Liverpool as well, although I did not speak with their coach.

“I did not want to join a big Champions League club right away. It is too early for that. I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga first now.”

Ending up joining Red Bull Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer, it would appear that Keita is a firmly grounded professional right now who realises his regular starting opportunities would’ve been limited at a Premier League club.

However, Keita’s quotes do seem to suggest that he is potentially open to an English switch in the summer with the 21-year-old’s ‘too early’ statement perhaps revealing a bigger move is in his thinking eventually.

Keita has enjoyed a positive start to his Red Bull Leipzig career, scoring three goals in his opening six Bundesliga appearances for the newly promoted side.
