They’ve been heavily linked with a swoop for Cesc Fabregas since Antonio Conte benched him at Chelsea but AC Milan boss Vincenzo Montella has cooled interest in the Spaniard, report The Express.

The Rossoneri had been linked with the 29-year-old even before Riccardo Montolivo got injured on international duty with Italy this week but Montella now appears to have ruled out a January swoop.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Montella claimed: “We are looking for a player who has the characteristics of Montolivo, who can also play in a midfield two.

“Fabregas? He doesn’t have those particular attributes.”

The news will come as a boost to Chelsea supporters who are hoping to retain such an experienced midfielder as Fabregas in their squad despite N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic and Oscar starting ahead of him right now.

But it remains to be seen whether the former Arsenal captain will push for a move in January if his lack of starting opportunities continues at Stamford Bridge throughout the Autumn.
