So Tottenham Hotspur are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2011 but their big Wembley night was a huge anti-climax with Monaco running out 1-2 victors last night.

It was a bleak re-introduction to the top level of European football for Spurs who surrendered two goals to the French giants within the opening half an hour.

Registering a consolation strike through a Toby Alderweireld header right before the half-time whistle, Tottenham’s second-half dominance just didn’t materialise in an equaliser with Mauricio Pochettino’s side incredibly frustrated following matchday one.

In many ways, the fact Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow played out a 2-2 draw in the other Group E fixture means that at least both of these sides are easier to catch on matchday two.

One thing is for sure though and that’s the fact that despite playing away to CSKA Moscow next, Pochettino will really need his side to achieve a positive result at Wembley next time out to truly make it feel like home.

A record breaking English gate of over 85,000 people filled Wembley last night but at times, you could hear a pin drop due to the frustrating manner of Tottenham’s performance.

Today, This Is Futbol is listing FIVE major takeaways from Tottenham Hotspur 1 Monaco 2.
