They eventually signed Paul Pogba in a world record breaking deal but Manchester United might have recruited another top class midfielder this summer, according to BILD.

Containing quotes from Bayern Munich chairman today, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that the German giants beat the Red Devils to Renato Sanches’ signature due to managerial uncertainty at Old Trafford.

A star of Portugal’s successful journey to Euro 2016 glory of course, Sanches is one of the highest-rated young players in Europe.

The former Benfica man actually ended up signing for Bayern prior to the European Championships for 35 million euros back on May 10th and back then, fellow countryman Jose Mourinho was yet to take the hotseat at Manchester United.

Speaking about Sanches’ arrival at Allianz Arena, Rummenigge said: “We knew very well that Renato had a firm offer from Manchester United.

“I heard that the United deal couldn’t be completed, as they didn’t know who their next manager would be.

“We invited Benfica’s president and Sanches’s agent to Madrid and that night we shook hands on the transfer.”

While Red Devils supporters went on to be absolutely delighted with the return of Paul Pogba, the prospect of Renato Sanches working under his Portuguese compatriot Mourinho certainly would’ve been an interesting partnership.
