According to reports from Italian publication Calcio Mercato today, Chelsea have been linked with a shock swoop for Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian.

A £12.7 million arrival from Torino last summer, Darmian started his Old Trafford career well under Louis van Gaal but faded badly towards the end of last season.

With Antonio Valencia the preferred choice at right back under Jose Mourinho so far this season, the report claims the Italian could be reunited with Antonio Conte who has managed him with the Azzurri national team of course.

Withh Cesar Azpilicueta having long reverted to the position of left back now, there still appears to be room for defensive reinforcements at Stamford Bridge with Branislav Ivanovic ageing and young Ola Aina still inexperienced.

The report from Calcio Mercato also claims that Serie A giants Juventus and Napoli are monitoring Darmian’s situation.

While the season has only just started of course, Jose Mourinho is a manager who does tend to work with a tight number of players in his squad so it remains to be seen whether Darmian can force his way back into the reckoning before January.
