He previously turned down Manchester United’s advances in 2015 but the Red Devils are planning another £42 million swoop for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, report The Mirror.

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, United are confident that a fee exceeding £40 million will be enough to convince Real Madrid to cash in on their Spanish international who is now 30-years-old.

With both Chris Smalling and Daley Blind looking shaky in the early weeks of the new campaign, Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to recruit Ramos whom he managed in his three-year spell at the Bernabeu.

Manchester United only made one defensive addition to their back line over the summer, recruiting Eric Bailly from Villarreal for £30 million but it appears the Red Devils are still looking for a leader.

Ramos is most certainly that kind of character having won everything there is to win in the game, scooping 12 major honours in his eleven years at Real Madrid, not to mention two European Championship titles and a World Cup with Spain.
