Still yet to get the most out of his underperforming central midfield stars this term, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has ordered scouts to run the rule over William Carvalho, report Squawka.

The Sporting Lisbon star won Euro 2016 with Portugal over the summer and the 6 ft 1 in defensive midfielder is believed to be the man to add greater steel to the Red Devils’ midfield.

A transfer target for both Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion in the past, Carvalho is only 24-year-old while boasting a passing completion rate of 87 per cent from Sporting’s opening five fixture in the Primeira Liga.

Portuguese publication A Bola claim Manchester United are now formalising their interest in Carvalho who would represent a direct alternative to the likes of Marouane Fellaini.

With Fellaini having struggled to convince Manchester United fans that he’s the answer in central midfield, both Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin are likely to receive an opportunity in the EFL Cup at Northampton Town this evening.

While these players were brought to Old Trafford for big money, any move for Carvalho would surely depend on one of these Red Devils stars making an exit to make room in Jose Mourinho’s squad.
