Luis Suarez to Arsenal

Luis Suarez

Ah, the infamous £40 million plus a pound deal that never was!

When Liverpool’s Luis Suarez undoubtedly had his head turned by interest from afar in 2013, it was Arsenal who were rumoured to be the next destination for the Uruguayan in what would have been a hugely controversial move.

The understanding at the time was that any offer exceeding Suarez’s apparent £40 million release clause would take him to new surroundings but that infamously proved not to be the case.

Arsenal took the law into their own hands with a now iconic £40 million + £1 bid for Suarez in July of that year prompting Reds owner John W. Henry to infamously tweet “What are they smoking over there at the Enirates?”

The Gunners’ failed pursuit of Suarez is all the more difficult to take for Gooners considering his scintillating form at Barcelona that has propelled him to a level almost alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He’s definitely the kind of striker Arsenal have been missing out on badly in the last 10 years or so.
