5 most likely Arsenal captain candidates after Mertesacker

Granit Xhaka

Having just enjoyed a fantastic week for Arsenal having struck two long range goals against both Hull City and then Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup, Granit Xhaka is displaying what all the fuss is about.

In many ways, scoring isn’t even Xhaka’s game but at the same time, Gunners supporters have loved the way in which he looks commanding in central midfield while admiring his eye for both long and short range passes.

It was immediately apparent during Euro 2016 that Xhaka loves a tackle and after all, he’s stood in as Borussia Monchengladbach captain in the past so completing the same role at Arsenal looks a popular choice, should he continue to impress in a Gunners shirt.

This week, Arsenal legend Ian Wright even reiterated his belief that Xhaka has captain credentials.
