Sunderland close on 22-year-old defender

Sunderland are closing in on a loan deal for Javier Manquillo of Atletico Madrid, according to Sky Sports

The Black Cats have so far struggled in the transfer market, with their early season plans rocked by the departure of manager Sam Allardyce for pastures new.

David Moyes has stepped into the dugout on Wearside, though has struggled in the early stages of his tenure at the Stadium of Light.

Though the Scotsman has made a number of signings for the club, they have lost both of their opening fixtures and the former Man United coach even conceded himself that they could be in for a relegation dog-fight.

However, the club are reportedly ready to seal the season-long loan deal for the Spaniard, who will be no stranger to the Premier League.

He was part of the Liverpool squad that embarked on their only Champions League campaign in recent years, though struggled to convince during his year on loan with the Reds.

Since, however, he has enjoyed a good spell with Marseille.

Considering the formidable defence currently available to Diego Simeone with Los Rojiblancos, the 22-year-old has reportedly been deemed surplus to requirements.

As a result, he is understood to be closing in on a move to Sunderland in an effort to bolster their backline.

Will Moyes have enough to keep Sunderland up? Let us know below…
