Stoke City are hopeful of signing Manchester United defender Phil Jones this summer, as reported by the Stoke Sentinel

The 24-year-old England international has seen his progress stall in recent seasons after struggling for form and fitness in equal measure.

Despite infamously being praised by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, the ex-Blackburn utility man has failed to live up to such expectation.

Since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, he is yet to feature in competitive competition and has seen the likes of Eric Bailly arrive to increase competition.

One of the major problems in his failure, so far anyway, to fulfil his potential is in part down to the fact he has been unable to nail down a regular position.

Utilised as a right-back, central defender and holding midfielder for both club and country, it has been hard for him to properly establish himself.

Still, according to WhoScored, he is noted for his ability to hold onto the ball and his concentration.

Though he penned a new four-year deal only last summer, Potters assistant manager Mark Bowen has revealed the club’s interest in a potential deal.

“I remember Sam Allardyce talking about him when he broke through and said he was the new Duncan Edwards,” said the 52-year-old Welshman.

“He did well as a youngster, got the big move, but it hasn’t worked out for him there.

“I don’t know how close we are or how far down the line it’s gone.”

Jones is reported to be open to the idea to end his nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams in an attempt to find his way back into the England squad.
