He has been unceremoniously dumped from the Manchester United first team; and now he could leave the club all together.

It has been a tough couple of months for German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Last season was one to forget, as he struggled to find a place in the Manchester United first-team amid a number of injury lay-offs.

To further add insult to injury, a number of stellar performances could not lead his native Germany to the European Championships – despite the World Cup winners being stern favourites for the title.

The arrival of Jose Mourinho at the club was supposed to bring new hope for Schweinsteiger, with the new manager typically backing older, more experienced players.

In reality the exact opposite has happened; Schewinsteiger has been dumped from the United first-team, and now finds himself training with the under-21 squad at Carrington.

Whilst his future has been up in the air in recent weeks, an article produced by the Guardian today has suggested that Man United would be willing to take a loss on the German midfielder – and would actually allow him to leave the club on a free should a prospective buyer come along.

It seems bizarre that a multi-time league champion, Champion’s League winner AND World Cup winner would be allowed to leave on a free; but such is the relationship between Mourinho and Schweinsteiger.

Interestingly, the Daily Star has recently reported that a number of clubs, both within Europe and outside of it, are interested in the experienced German.

The news that United would be willing to sell the midfielder on a free is likely to increase the interest in him even further; meaning there could be significant competition to land his signature.

Anyone who can get their hands on Schweinsteiger will be getting quite the player…
