According to reports from Sport, Liverpool have launched a formal transfer bid for West Ham target and former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

The Belgium international spent five seasons at the Emirates, captaining the Gunners from 2012 onwards, before sealing a £15million transfer to Barcelona in summer 2014.

But the 30-year-old has gone on to make just 21 appearances across all competitions for the Catalans amid a host of injury problems – including a recurring hamstring issue that eventually required surgery.

The centre-back looks set to leave the Nou Camp during the summer transfer window and according to Sport, a number of clubs are interested in bringing him back to the Premier League.

That includes Liverpool, who have reportedly launched a formal €10million bid for Vermaelen in a bid to boost their current centre-back options, with veteran Kolo Toure set to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer.

However, the Spanish publication claim West Ham are also keen on signing the 6-foot defender and expect the east London club to launch a rival bid of their own at some point.
