Odion Ighalo

According to reports from Mirror Football, Manchester United are leading the race to sign Arsenal and Chelsea strike target Odion Ighalo during the January transfer window.

The Nigerian assassin is currently sixth in the Premier League’s scoring charts, his 14-goal haul keeping Watford in contention for a top-half finish, and helped the Hornets gain promotion from the Championship last season with 20 strikes in the second tier.

The 26-year-old’s consistent scoring record in English football has seen him linked with some of its top clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, most notably Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Rumour has it Watford are ready to cash in on Ighalo and replace him with Isaac Success of Granada – a La Liga outfit who share owners with the Hornets, the Pozzo family – whilst recent reports have claimed the Gunners are ‘stepping up their interest‘ in the 6 foot 2 goalscorer.

But according to Mirror Football, the Red Devils are currently heading the pack in the race for Ighalo’s signature and will target during the coming transfer window him regardless of whether Louis van Gaal or allegedly incoming manager Jose Mourinho are in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The report follows the seven-cap international’s recent admission that he’d struggle to turn down a transfer to Manchester United. As quoted by Mirror Football, he said; “I don’t think I will be moving but I’m not sure I’d say no if United called. They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV. They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream.”
