Mario Gotze

According to reports from Sky Sports, Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze has played down speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool.

The 23-year-old, who bagged an extra-time winner for Germany during the 2014 World Cup final, emerged as one of the most exciting youngsters in Europe whilst working under now-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – where the duo won consecutive Bundesliga titles together.

But the attacking midfielder has suffered a fall from grace since his controversial transfer to the Allianz Arena in summer 2013, failing to hold down a consistent role in Pep Guardiola’s starting Xi despite a decent return of 34 goals from his two-and-a-half campaigns with the Bavarians.

Reports earlier this week suggested Liverpool are eyeing a summer swoop for the 48-cap international worth a whopping £37million which, if accepted by Bayern, would constitute a new record transfer fee for the Merseyside outfit.

But Gotze has insisted he’s received no contact from the Reds, whilst ruling out any chance of a move during the January transfer window. As quoted by Sky Sports, he said; “I can rule out a move to Liverpool this winter. I don’t know where the rumours about Klopp and me are coming from.

“I have not heard anything. You should ask Klopp if he wants me at Liverpool. If he wants me, he should approach me. I have six nice months ahead of me. It is always annoying when you cannot play and cannot help the team. It is only normal that you think about things like that. But you have to look at the positives and build on those.”
