Out - Joel Campbell

According to The Sun, Manchester United have joined the race to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani; whilst The Telegraph report that Arsenal are preparing a contract extension for in-form winger Joel Campbell.

Algerian international Slimani has bagged 42 goals in 90 appearances during his two-and-a-half terms with Sporting, including a potent return of 13 goals from 16 Primeira Liga outings this season.

West Ham were courting the 27-year-old last summer whilst Leicester City have been linked more recently. But The Sun claim United are now pushing their way to the front of the queue for Slimani’s signature after scouting him extensively over the last two months. The 6 foot 1 frontman is rated at around £12million.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph report that Arsenal are ready to hand Joel Campbell a new contract that will extend his current terms past the end of the season, following the Costa Rica international’s recent flurry of fine form.

The 23-year-old forward has impressed since first stepping in to fill the void of the injured Alexis Sanchez in November, grabbing two goals and three assists from 10 starts in the Premier League and Champions League combined – including a set-up against Liverpool yesterday evening.

Ahead of the 3-3 draw at Anfield, manager Arsene Wenger said of Campbell; “What is very interesting in Campbell’s case is that he looks like he has gained more confidence and authority in his game and in the final third he is a dangerous player. You want to be surprised by the quality of your players and where he surprises you is in the intensity of his team-work.”
