Joel Matip

According to reports from Mirror Football, Schalke defender Joel Matip is set to join Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The versatile Cameroon international, who has featured as a centre-half, a full-back and a defensive midfielder throughout his Bundesliga career, has made 239 appearances for the Miners since his first-team debut in 2009.

The 24-year-old has been a mainstay in the Schalke starting Xi this season, featuring in every minute of their league campaign thus far and operating exclusively at centre-back.

But Matip’s future at the Veltins Arena has been open to speculation for some time, with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, and Liverpool have been heavily linked with his services during the last few weeks.

Mirror Football now claim that the 6 foot 4 defender has agreed a move to Anfield in principle for summer 2016, having been allowed to discuss pre-contract arrangements with foreign clubs since January 1st under the Bosman ruling.

The Reds signed QPR’s Steven Caulker on loan yesterday following injuries to all four of their senior centre-backs, but his stay on Merseyside is unlikely to be made permanent now that Liverpool have secured Matip’s services for next season. The length and value of the 27-cap international’s contract
