According to reports from Calcio Mercato, Roma are targeting Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.
Not everybody was convinced by the France international when he moved to Merseyside from PSG at a cost of £18million in summer 2013.
Under Brendan Rodgers, the 25-year-old struggled to hold down a first-team role, making just 34 appearances out of a possible 76 during the last two seasons.
But Sakho’s influence has steadily grown since an underwhelming start and most Reds fans now view him as the rightful partner to Martin Skrtel at the heart of defence.
And it appears the 6 foot 2 centre-back’s progression has also caught the eye of AS Roma, as claimed by Italian publication Calcio Mercato.
The Stadio Olimpico outfit have scored the most goals of any Serie A side this season, 29, but that impressive haul has been offset by the worst goals conceded record in the division’s top six, leaking 17 in 14 games.
Former Arsenal target Kostas Manolas and summer signing Antonio Rudiger have struggled as a partnership and Giallorossi view Sakho as a potential midseason solution.
Yet, a move still seems unlikely. Liverpool are finally seeing the best from Sakho and selling him in January would place their defensive hopes for the rest of the season on £20million flop Dejan Lovren.
