The Next Cristiano Ronaldo - Goncalo Guedes

According to reports from The Daily Star, widespread interest in Goncalo Guedes could see a bidding war erupt between Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.

The Benfica winger is just 18 years of age but has already made quite the impression on Portuguese football. After claiming the Breakthrough Player of the Year award in the second tier last term, amassing eight goals and 14 assists for Benfica B, the teenager has muscled his way into the Portugal national team this season and earned comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo.

His Champions League form, netting past Atletico Madrid in the Group Stages to help Benfica secure a Round of 16 tie with Zenit, has particularly caught the attention of the Premier League’s top clubs. Arsenal, Chelsea, City and United have all been linked over the last few months and The Daily Star document their interest once again – claiming the Gunners and the Blues have been conducting scouting missions.

But citing German publication Bild, the British tabloid claim that United are ‘especially’ interested in the 5 foot 10 midfielder, who represented Portugal twice during November’s international break. It is perhaps no surprise, considering manager Louis van Gaal has made no secret of his desire to sign another winger in recent weeks.

Nonetheless, widespread interest from the Premier League and yonder could lead to a contested bidding war for Guedes’ services – that may even result in one suitor activating his rather steep £40million release clause.
