Juande Ramos

According to reports from The Times via The Express, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramos has emerged as a shock candidate to succeed Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

The Blues endured their ninth Premier League defeat of the season on Monday night at the hands of unexpected table toppers Leicester City, leaving them in 16th place with just 15 points after 16 games. They’re now just a point above the relegation zone and 14 away from a Champions League spot.

Understandable doubts over Mourinho’s future at Stamford Bridge have resultantly developed throughout the media in recent days, with BBC Sport reporting that the Blues board have already held discussions over whether they should sack the Portuguese.

And according to The Times, the west London club have already identified one potential replacement to steady the ship on an interim basis until the end of the season – former Spurs gaffer Juande Ramos.

The Spaniard last just two days short of a calendar year at White Hart Lane, sacked in October 2008 as the Lilywhites found themselves in bottom place after taking just two points from their first eight games of the season.

The 61-year-old’s stock outside of the Premier League is a little higher. He twice won the UEFA Cup with Sevilla, managed Real Madrid for a short spell and most recently led Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk to a runner-up finish in the Ukrainian top flight. But Chelsea fans are likely to view it as an underwhelming appointment.
