Mauro Icardi

According to reports from The Express, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed he will not look to add to his strikeforce during the January transfer window – ruling the title favourites out of the race to sign Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool target Mauro Icardi.

The Inter Milan striker has been linked with a number of major English clubs since the end of last season, in no small part due to him finishing the 2014/15 campaign as Serie A’s top scorer with 22 goals in 36 appearances. He appeared to end speculation by signing a four-year contract in June, but links with the Premier League’s top sides have re-emerged in recent weeks.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are all known admirers of the Argentina international’s, with the Italian media claiming in November that the Premier League trio could make offers of £25million during the January transfer window, whilst reports from earlier this week alleged Manchester City are preparing a rival £28million bid.

But the latest comments from the Etihad gaffer would suggest otherwise. As quoted by The Express, he ruled out a move for another striker in the January transfer window during today’s press conference, telling reporters; “Am I looking to sign new players in January? No, for the moment, nothing changes.

“Why? Because we have a squad that we think is the best squad for what we require. I don’t think we need to make changes so we continue the same way with Wilfried, with Kun [Aguero], with [Raheem] Sterling and with Kelechi.”

There are still a number of clubs targeting Icardi and Inter Milan remain reluctant to sell. But the good news for Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool is that the Premier League’s top-spending club from last summer appear to be out of the picture.
