According to reports from Here Is The City, Arsenal are considering a shock January swoop for Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur; whilst Chelsea have confirmed a new deal for Gary Cahill via their official website.

The Gunners have been linked with a number of potential midseason replacements for defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin, who could be sidelined until February with a knee injury, and HITC claim McArthur is the latest to pop up on their radar.

The Scotland international has proved a shrewd addition to the Palace starting Xi since arriving from Wigan in summer 2014, this season bagging two goals and two assists in 14 Premier League appearances whilst averaging 2.2 tackles, 2.4 interceptions and one created chance per match.

Arsenal scouts are believed to have delivered ‘glowing reports’ on the 28-year-old over the last few weeks.

Meanwhile, Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill has signed a new four-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2019.

The 29-year-old, who has made 177 appearances and lifted a Champions League title, a Premier League title, a Europa League title, an FA Cup and a Capital One Cup since joining the Blues from Bolton in January 2012, said upon signing his new deal; “I’m really pleased to commit my future to Chelsea and it’s great the club has put their faith in me. I have achieved a lot here and I hope I can keep on learning, helping the team and lifting trophies over the next four years.”
