Cazorla injury

Just when Arsenal fans thought their club’s injury crisis couldn’t get any worse, playmaking midfielder Santi Cazorla is ruled out until March with a knee injury.

The Spain international’s importance to the Gunners has steadily increased since he was first deployed in central midfield during a 2-0 win over Manchester City in January – his experience, vision and ambipedal passing game making him very much the ‘brains’ of the Arsenal starting Xi – and the 30-year-old will be sorely missed over the next few months.

To make matters worse, midfield partner Francis Coquelin – who has proved an equal revelation for more defensive reasons since first featuring as Arsenal’s engine room anchor against the Citizens – will also be watching from the sidelines for the foreseeable future due to injury, leaving an almighty void in the middle of the park.

Fortunately, however, the January transfer window is just around the corner, giving Arsene Wenger the chance to sign a couple of replacements for the second half of the season. With that in mind, here’s SIX January signings who could help fill Coquelin and Cazorla’s enormous void at the heart of the Gunners’ starting Xi.
