According to reports from The Metro, Manchester United have been scouting Fiorentina’s Borja Valero, whilst Premier League rivals Southampton are also interested in signing the former West Bromwich Albion midfielder.
The one-cap Spain international didn’t hit the heights expected during his three-year spell at the Hawthorns, finding three assists in 30 appearances during his only Premier League campaign before being sent out on loan to Mallorca and Villarreal.
But the 30-year-old impressed in the Spanish top flight, to the extent that Villarreal signed him permanently in 2011, and has been in good form for current employers Fiorentina this season with one goal and two assists in 13 Serie A appearances. He’s also averaged 1.1 tackles, 2.5 created chances and 1.5 successful dribbles per match in the Italian top flight.
According to The Metro, who cite Swiss publication Blick, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has taken an interest in Valero and recently sent chief scout Peter Braund to take a closer look at the versatile midfielder.
But he’s also a reported target of Southampton and The Metro claim a move to St. Mary’s seems somewhat more likely.
