Marco Amelia

According to reports from Sky Sports and The Daily Mail, Chelsea have agreed terms with trialist Marco Amelia and will officially complete the transfer at some point today.

The 33 year-old goalkeeper was part of Marcello Lippi’s World Cup-winning Italy squad in 2006 and has represented Livorno, Palermo, Genoa and AC Milan throughout his career, making 317 appearances across all competitions. He left the San Siro in 2014 and has been a free agent since the end of last season.

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed last week that Amelia had been invited to train with Chelsea amid a goalkeeping crisis at Stamford Bridge. No.1 Thibaut Courtois is sidelined until December following knee surgery, meaning the Blues will have to depend on 21 year-old Jamal Blackman if Asmir Begovic is injured or suspended in the coming weeks.

Mourinho said; “He knows the responsibility of playing in the Champions League, his national team. The last couple of years he didn’t play so much and hasn’t trained with a team for a few months, but what you need is some cover and stability until Courtois is back. Maybe he’s the guy to give us that.”

And according to Sky Sports, it appears some form of contract has been agreed with the veteran shot-stopper after his agent, Federico Pastorello, posted on Instagram yesterday; “Dinner with #marcoamelia to celebrate the contract with Chelsea FC!!! Good luck!!”

The Daily Mail, meanwhile, claim Chelsea will officially complete their deal for Amelia at some point today.
