According to reports from Sky Sports this afternoon, the agent of Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes has confirmed he’ll be leaving Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

The former Barcelona No.1 joined the Red Devils as a free agent in January 2014 and made two Premier League appearances at the end of last season following an injury to David De Gea.

But the Spain international was transfer listed by Louis van Gaal during the summer after allegedly refusing to represent United’s U21 squad and has since been made to train away from the rest of the first team at Carrington.

That’s seen him linked with moves to Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle in recent weeks with the Magpies particularly interested due to Tim Krul’s season-ending injury whilst on international duty with the Netherlands.

United could effectively cancel Valdes’ contract to allow him leave on a free transfer but they’re unwilling to sanction a move to a direct Premier League rival – making a switch to St. James’ Park all the more likely.

And in a further boost to the Toon’s transfer hopes, the 33 year-old’s agent has confirmed today that he intends to leave the Red Devils in January but isn’t interested in returning to La Liga.

Representative Gines Carvajal told Radio Marca; “He needs to go to a place he feels is right for him. He won’t be coming to Spain, unless he decides otherwise. It is obvious he must leave in January and and we will try to make sure he’s happy and feels comfortable [with the move].”

It follows reports from yesterday evening claiming Valdes is ‘open’ to the idea of joining the Tyneside club.
