Sergi Samper

According to reports from The Daily Star this morning, Manchester United have been running the rule over Arsenal target and Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper.

The 20 year-old is highly rated at the Nou Camp and made his senior debut for the Catalans at the start of last season, during a 1-0 win over Cypriot outfit APOEL FC in the group stages of the Champions League, but has failed to become a recurring fixture in Luis Enrique’s first team plans.

He’s yet to make an appearance in La Liga this season and earlier this month was linked with a move to Arsenal who, along with Liverpool, monitored the Spain U21’s availability during the summer transfer window.

According to The Star, however, the Gunners face a new competitor for the 20 year-old’s signature in the form of divisional rivals Manchester United.

Samper was issued a rare start in the Copa del Rey during a scoreless draw with third-tier outfit Villanovense yesterday evening and Red Devils scouts were in attendance, believed to be running the rule over the prodigious midfielder. Debutant Wilfried Kaptoum also caught their eye.

Samper’s contract is known to include an £8.5million release clause – well within the financial reach of the Premier League duo.
