Liverpool move ahead of Chelsea in £29m race for ‘new Busquets’

Ruben Neves

According to reports from Mirror Football this afternoon, Liverpool have made an ‘informal approach’ to sign FC Porto prodigy Ruben Neves.

The central midfielder, who team-mate Cristian Tello has compared to Barcelona’s formidable anchor man Sergio Busquets, is only 18 years of age but has already registered 42 senior appearances for the Dragons – featuring prominently in their recent 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Champions League.

The Blues are admirers of the Portugal U21 – who holds the record as the youngest ever player to represent his country at that age group – with reports earlier this month revealing they intend to make a formal bid next summer. They’ve allegedly been scouting Neves for some time and view him as potential alternative to Paul Pogba.

According to Mirror Football, however, fellow suitors Liverpool could well get there first. They’ve also been linked in recent weeks and have now taken the next step by making an ‘informal enquiry’.

The British newspaper claim it was ‘welcomed’ by Neves’ entourage, adding weight to rumours that the Reds could launch an offer in the January transfer window and suggesting Liverpool’s long-term interest is shared by fresh managerial appointment Jurgen Klopp.

But bringing him to Anfield in January – or for that matter, Stamford Bridge next summer – could require activating the midfield prodigy’s release clause, which is set at a rather steep £29million.
