Liverpool enter Chelsea’s race to sign £29m ‘new Busquets’

Ruben Neves

According to reports from The Metro yesterday evening, Liverpool have joined the race to sign in-demand Porto prodigy Ruben Neves.

The defensive midfielder, who team-mate Cristian Tello has compared to Barcelona’s formidable anchor man Sergio Busquets, has already emerged as a regular member of the Dragons’ starting Xi at just 18 years of age, registering 42 appearances across all competitions since his debut at the start of last season.

Chelsea have been linked with the Portugal U21 since the close of the transfer window, with reports from earlier this month claiming the west London outfit are preparing a bid for next summer.

But acording to The Metro, who cite Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb, those plans could be scuppered by Liverpool’s apparent interest in the 5 foot 11 midfielder. They claim new Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp has ‘made it clear’ he wants to bring Neves to Anfield and ‘the mounting interest could see him leave Porto in January’.

Whether it’s Chelsea, Liverpool or fellow rumoured admirers Barcelona and Real Madrid, however, any potential suitor will likely have to activate the Portuguese prospect’s £29million release clause.
