Gonzalo Higuain

According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Arsenal are targeting Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain once again.

The 27 year-old, who boasts a career return of 226 goals in 471 appearances throughout his spells with River Plate, Real Madrid, the Naples outfit and the Argentina national team, came close to an Emirates switch in summer 2013 but eventually moved to the Italian top flight instead.

He’s since netted 62 times in 114 appearances for Napoli, including a potent return of nine goals in twelve outings across all competitions this season, and is probably the most talented striker in European football not plying his trade at Champions League level this term following the club’s failure to qualify during the 2014/15 campaign.

According to The Express, who cite Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb, the Gunners are targeting Higuain once again and will revive their interest either in January or in summer 2016.

Prizing the 52-cap international away from Stadio San Paolo proved a particularly difficult task during the summer, however. Amid rumours of a move to the Premier League, the club released an official statement insisting any potential suitor would have to activate Higuain’s £68million release clause.

But with two years left on his contract come the summer, Napoli might be more prepared to negotiate.
