According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Arsenal failed in their late swoop for PSG striker Edinson Cavani because they didn’t want to pay his £50million price-tag.
The Gunners were unsuccessful in their summer-long courtship of Real Madrid front-man Karim Benzema and turned to Cavani during the latter days of the summer transfer window as a likeminded alternative.
Much like the Bernabeu star, the Uruguay international is famed for his blend of physicality and goals, measuring in at 6 foot and boasting prolific returns of 56 goals in 96 appearances for PSG – including 31 goals across all competitions last season – and 104 in 138 for former club Napoli.
There was certainly scope for a late switch to the Emirates. Cavani’s disillusionment with his supporting to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the PSG starting XI has been well documented for some time. Likewise, Arsene Wenger traveled to Paris earlier this week, seemingly to try and broker a last minute deal.
But according to Mirror Football’s John Cross, the Gunners gaffer refused to pay the South American’s £50million price-tag, fearing his lack of resale value at 28 years of age.
It leaves Arsenal with the rather harrowing statistic of being the only club in Europe’s five leading top flights not to sign an outfield player this summer – their solitary signing coming in the form of Chelsea’s Petr Cech.
decision of Wenger is very correct.cavani is very expressive.
