Martinez ready to sell if Chelsea or Man United breach £30m mark

John Stones

According to reports from The Telegraph yesterday evening, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has accepted that he’ll be forced to sell defender John Stones if a bid from one of his Premier League suitors breaches the £30million mark.

The 21 year-old has emerged as one of the most promising home-grown defenders in the Premier League since moving to Goodison Park from Barnsley in January 2013, earning a nomination for the 2014 Golden Boy award whilst forging an impressive centre-back partnership with Phil Jagielka.

That’s generated plenty of interest from the Premier League’s top clubs. Front-runners Chelsea have already seen two bids rejected by the Mersey outfitManchester United have informed Stones of their interest in his services and Manchester City have also been linked.

Publicly, Roberto Martinez has continually insisted the England international won’t be allowed to leave, having signed a contract extension until 2019 only last summer.

But according to The Telegraph, the Toffees hierarchy have accepted that they’ll be unable to refuse a bid that breaches the £30million mark, eclipsing the fee Manchester United paid for Rio Ferdinand in 2002 and touching upon the Premier League’s record fee for a defender – currently held by Manchester City’s £32million signing Eliaquim Mangala.

The British newspaper also claim Chelsea are on the verge of making a third bid for that precise sum – so we could see some movement in the coming days.

Chelsea sold David Luiz for £50m.
David Luiz is not fit to lace John Stones boots.
Why do you think £30m is enough?
Everton are not desperate for the money.

    • Christy Malyan says:

Because Everton would be mad to turn down a Premier League record fee for a defender and £27m profit for a 21 year-old who has only made 44 league appearances for them.

And overall, you’re not going to get a considerably better offer. He’s worth more selling to a Premier League club than abroad because he’s home-grown, and his contract is only going to wind down if Everton don’t sell this summer.

It’s the same reason Man United have made a £15m loss on Angel Di Maria – his value depreciated because his contract had lost a year.

Also, you say David Luiz isn’t fit to lace Stones’ boots – but for all you know, Stones could break his leg tomorrow, spend two years on the sidelines and become a frightfully average player. Happened 1000s and 1000s of times before in the Premier League. Even if Everton don’t need the money, a record fee is too good to turn down.

“his contract is only going to wind down if Everton don’t sell this summer.”

He’s got four more years left on his contract!! His value is going to go up not down!!

        • Christy Malyan says:

Chelsea won’t increase their offer in a year’s time for a player with less years on his contract and I doubt Stones will ever reach the point where he’s signing a new deal for Everton.
