According to reports from The Express this morning, Manchester United are hoping to hijack Manchester City’s move for Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne with a £55million bid.

The former Chelsea youngster struggled to impress during his two years at Stamford Bridge, being sold to Wolfsburg for £18million in January 2014 after just six first team appearances.

But he’s since emerged as one of the top attacking midfielders in European football, finishing last season with 10 goals and 21 assists in 34 league appearances to claim the Footballer of the Year award in Germany.

Manchester City have targeted the 24 year-old for much of the summer and Wolfsburg reportedly accepted a bid around the £50million mark last Friday, after rejecting a series of previous offers.

But the Belgium international has also been mooted as a possible target for Manchester United and according to The Express, the Old Trafford outfit have accelerated their interest after missing out on Barcelona star Pedro, who is now an official Chelsea player.

Citing German publication Sport 1, they claim the Red Devils are trying to gazump their local rivals with a £55million bid and insinuate they could go even higher if necessary – with the club ready to ‘break the bank’ to bring De Bruyne to Old Trafford.

Whether De Bruyne would be interested in joining United remains to be seen. They may have the finance to sign him but City’s well-documented, relentless pursuit sends a clear message of how highly he’s regarded at the Etihad.
