Nicolas Otamendi

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Manchester City are hoping to beat Manchester United to the signing of Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi.

The Argentina international was nothing short of sensational for the Mestalla outfit last season, netting six times in 35 La Liga appearances whilst averaging 2.9 tackles, 3.1 interceptions, 7.3 clearances and 3.5 successful aerial duels per match.

Both clubs have been linked with the 27 year-old this summer, with reports in July claiming the Manchester rivals had held separate talks with Otamendi’s agent – the renowned Jorge Mendes.

But yesterday came news that Spanish journalist Nacho Cotino has seen legal documentation and tax forms suggesting United are close to completing a deal for the 6 foot centre-half, whose contract includes a £35million release clause.

According to Mirror Football, however, City are now hoping they can beat United to their defensive target – once they complete a deal for Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne.

It follows the Citizens missing out on Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin, who is set to sign a new contract at Vincente Calderon after rejecting an offer from Manuel Pellegrini’s side last month.

But Otamendi’s not the only United target City are hoping to snap up this summer. As revealed on Tuesday, they’re also attempting to hijack the Red Devils’ deal for Barcelona star Pedro at the final hour.

He’s set to leave the Nou Camp after scoring the winner in this week’s UEFA Super Cup. Should City activate his £22million release clause, they’ll be allowed to negotiate personal terms.
