Dimitar Berbatov

According to reports from The Express this morning, former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov could make a shock Premier League return with Aston Villa this summer.

Bulgaria’s all-time leading goalscorer, famed for eloquent if somewhat lackadaisical style of play, netted 94 times in 229 Premier League appearances throughout his spells with Spurs, the Red Devils and Fulham, and fired United to the 2010/11 title with a Golden boot-winning haul.

The 34 year-old joined Monaco after leaving Craven Cottage in January 2014 and last season netted past Arsenal to take the French club through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

But Berbatov’s contract at Stade Louis II expired in June and he’s been hotly tipped for a return to the English top flight.

Premier League new boys Bournemouth were linked earlier this summer but according to The Express, an Aston Villa switch is becoming increasingly likely.

Discussions over the phone have been ongoing for some time but Villa boss Tim Sherwood now wants a face-to-face meeting, which will see the 6 foot 2 striker cut short his holiday in Bulgaria.

The Express quote an insider source as saying; “He’ll travel to Birmingham on Monday. He held several talks on the phone but the Villa bosses want some ‘straight’ talks. If they reach a final agreement, it’s possible Berbatov to have a medical on Tuesday or Wednesday.”

“He still has offers from Werder Bremen and a promoted English club but Villa is his priority at this stage,” the source added.
