Cristian Zapata

According to reports from ESPN this morning, Everton are targeting AC Milan defender Cristian Zapata as a potential replacement for John Stones.

The 28 year-old joined the San Siro outfit in summer 2012, since registering 70 appearances across all competitions, and featured prominently in the Colombia squad that reached the quarter finals of last summer’s World Cup.

The 6 foot 2 centre-back’s contract expires at the end of the season and having managed just eight Serie A starts last term – partly due to injury – the Toffees are hoping to sign him on the cheap.

The news will be a huge boost to the transfer efforts of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, who have all been mooted as potential suitors of Everton’s prodigious centre-half John Stones over the last few weeks.

Thus far, Goodison gaffer Roberto Martinez has remained adamant that the 21 year-old won’t be allowed to leave the Toffees this summer.

But Chelsea are expected to put them under pressure with a £30million bid this week; and with ESPN claiming Zapara is now at the top of the Spaniard’s list of potential replacements, he could reluctantly decide to sell.
