Chelsea and Man United must break PL record to land England starlet

John Stones

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Everton will only sell in-demand centre-back John Stones for a record-breaking fee.

The 21 year-old has emerged as one of the most promising home-grown defenders in the Premier League since moving to Goodison Park from Barnsley in January 2013, earning a place on England’s stand-by list for the 2014 World Cup and a nomination for the 2014 Golden Boy award.

That dramatic rise has caught the attention of Chelsea and Manchester United, who are both considered to be long-term admirers of Stones alongside Manchester City.

The Premier League champions have already made good on their interest, launching a £20million bid for the 6 foot 2 defender yesterday morning. It was immediately rejected by the Toffees but reports since have claimed the Blues will return with an improved offer by the end of the week.

The speculated fee is £26million but according to Mirror Football, that still won’t be enough to sign the four-cap international.

They claim Everton want a record-shattering fee if they’re to part with Stones; particularly, a Premier League record sum for a defender, that will topple Manchester City’s £31.9million swoop for Eliaquim Mangala last summer.
