According to reports from Sky Sports this afternoon, Napoli have insisted any potential suitor of Gonzalo Higuain must activate the striker’s £66million release clause.
The 27 year-old boasts a prolific return of 216 goals in 457 appearances throughout his spells with River Plate, Real Madrid, Napoli and the Argentine national team, including 29 goals for Partenopei across all competitions last season.
He’s widely expected to leave the Naples outfit this summer following their failure to qualify for the Champions League, triggering interest from Arsenal and Liverpool – as This Is Futbol revealed last month.
The Gunners came close to signing the 50-cap international two summers ago, but a dispute over valuations with former employers Real Madrid saw him move to Serie A instead.
According to Sky Sports, however, Napoli are reluctant to sell the 6 foot striker – and have insisted any buyer must therefore activate Higuain’s rather steep £66milion release clause.
“Napoli are keen to clarify certain articles, published in some newspapers, about the departure of Higuain,” the Italian outfit have said in an official club statement.
“The official clarification from Napoli is the following: there is a clause in Gonzalo Higuain’s contract. The clause is £66million. There have been no bids. Anyone who wants the player will have to pay the club that amount.”
Whether Arsenal or Liverpool are prepared to pay that almighty sum remains to be seen.
